![]() At that point, practically speaking, they had a monopoly on high-power Mac repair and diagnostic utilities. Over the years, Symantec, publisher of the Norton Utilities, bought Public Utilities and MacTools Pro from Fifth Generation Systems and Central Point, respectively. In the early 1990s, Mac users generally chose from amongst three popular repair utilities when the going got rough, and Disk First Aid was insufficient to correct the problem(s) at hand: Public Utilities, Norton Utilities for Macintosh (NUM), and MacTools Pro. Yet, even relatively casual users are expected to BUY the computer equivalent of the automobile technician’s diagnostic equipment, all because the computer hardware and software manufacturers cannot be bothered to supply products which work correctly! History (and author’s biases) Think about it… do you own diagnostic software and/or hardware for your audio system, video system, microwave oven, answering machine, or cell phone? Probably not, unless repairing one or more of those devices is your profession or a serious hobby. If computer hardware and productivity (non-utility) software had far fewer built-in errors and actually worked the way it is supposed to work, there would be a lot less necessity for repair utilities. Yet, these very repair utility software packages both suffer themselves from their own plentiful supply of programming errors (bugs), as well as suffering at the hands of operating system, hardware, and other software bugs in the Vintage Mac OS (9 and earlier) unprotected memory personal computing environment. They are extremely popular and often necessary, precisely because the other software and hardware they purport to fix/troubleshoot are so riddled with errors and mistakes as to make them barely usable under many normal circumstances. At least until someone invents the bulletproof personal computer operating system (OSeX seems to be a good move in that direction, though could use improvement).Īctually, computer repair utilities are strange beasts. Oh those repair utilities… gotta love ’em. I do not expect to put the sort of effort seen in the reviews below into reviewing TTP 4 or newer unless/until i start using it sufficiently, which so far looks unlikely. ![]() I therefore so far have no opinion on TTP 4 or later and these newer versions are not discussed in this review. While i actually have had a copy of TTP 4 (part of a bundle package) since fall 2007, i have spent no more than about 20 minutes using it so far, mostly poking at it. So far, my repair utility of choice for the Mac OS X series is DiskWarrior 3 or 4. I was dropped as a tester because at the time i was not running Mac OSeX. These experiences may have affected the tone, content, or both, of this review, even though i am unable to detect any significant influence from them. My dealings with MicroMat personnel were generally highly positive. While this was an unpaid position, i asked for, and received, a CD-ROM copy of a couple of TTP versions from MicroMat at no out-of-pocket cost to me. On an ending note, Adblock Plus makes the web experience enjoyable by removing annoying banners. However, you can create your own list of filters and rules if you feel like a lot of ads are being missed during the block process. The filter lists are updated on a regular basis, so as to contain the newest ads available on the web. Adblock Plus confronts the banners identified on a certain website with the filter list and determines which of the images should be blocked. Based on blocked ads, there is the possibility to create patterns, so as to remove images that are alike.Īnother interesting feature is the Subscription-based engine, which allows you to choose from a set of filter lists that contain information about popular ads. What’s more, that image will never be displayed again while you’re browsing the Internet. The principle it’s based upon is a very clever one: by default, it blocks all the dangerous items, but allows you to view each one of them and allow the ones you think are harmless.Īdditionally, if ads have been left out of the automatic blocking process, you can erase them using the right-click menu. Thank god I purchased the extended warranty through Whirlpool.įactor in that the food loss coverage of $250 is over the life of the warranty, not per event. For this sum of $ we have never seen such poor quality of workmanship on the inside workings of appliances. No hopes of it being declared a lemon or hopes of getting any monies refund. This means by the time it takes to aquire 4 claims the warranty is expired therefore rendering it useless moving forward. The instrument used throughout the industry since 1934 is called a Viscosity Cup or Stein-Hall Cup. Record the time and temperature of adhesive. The time in seconds is the Stein-Hall viscosity.Fill the viscosity cup with strained adhesive and with a stopwatch measure the time it takes for the level in the cup to drop from the upper pin to the lower pin.Continue until the time is 15 seconds (+/- 1 second). If it is shorter than that, bend the pins apart and check the calibration again. If it is longer than that, bend the pins together and check the calibration again. The time should be 15 seconds (+/- 1 second).Remove your finger and, with a stopwatch, measure the time it takes for the level in the cup to drop from the upper pin to the lower pin.Place finger over the orifice of the viscosity cup.Check the orifice to make sure it is not plugged, corroded or worn. Although it applies to general flows, it is easy to visualize and define in a simple shearing flow, such as a planar Couette flow. The Stein hall cup must be calibrated before performing the test. Viscosity is the material property which relates the viscous stresses in a material to the rate of change of a deformation (the strain rate). For instance, in a fluid such as water the stresses which arise from shearing the fluid do not depend on the distance the fluid has been sheared rather, they depend on how quickly the shearing occurs. In other materials, stresses are present which can be attributed to the deformation rate over time. Stresses which can be attributed to the deformation of a material from some rest state are called elastic stresses. For instance, if the material were a simple spring, the answer would be given by Hooke's law, which says that the force experienced by a spring is proportional to the distance displaced from equilibrium. In materials science and engineering, one is often interested in understanding the forces or stresses involved in the deformation of a material. In a general parallel flow, the shear stress is proportional to the gradient of the velocity. ![]() The relative strength of this force is a measure of the fluid's viscosity. Since the shearing flow is opposed by friction between adjacent layers of fluid (which are in relative motion), a force is required to sustain the motion of the upper plate. Definitions Dynamic viscosity Illustration of a planar Couette flow. Viscum also referred to a viscous glue derived from mistletoe berries. The word "viscosity" is derived from the Latin viscum (" mistletoe"). A fluid that has zero viscosity (non-viscous) is called ideal or inviscid. Zero viscosity (no resistance to shear stress) is observed only at very low temperatures in superfluids otherwise, the second law of thermodynamics requires all fluids to have positive viscosity. For example, the viscosity of a Newtonian fluid does not vary significantly with the rate of deformation. However, the dependence on some of these properties is negligible in certain cases. In general, viscosity depends on a fluid's state, such as its temperature, pressure, and rate of deformation. For a tube with a constant rate of flow, the strength of the compensating force is proportional to the fluid's viscosity. This is because a force is required to overcome the friction between the layers of the fluid which are in relative motion. Experiments show that some stress (such as a pressure difference between the two ends of the tube) is needed to sustain the flow. For instance, when a viscous fluid is forced through a tube, it flows more quickly near the tube's axis than near its walls. Viscosity is expressed in Zahn seconds which are correlated to viscosity in centistokes. Five cups are available differing only in the size of the orifice. Viscosity quantifies the internal frictional force between adjacent layers of fluid that are in relative motion. Inexpensive Boekel cup type viscometers measure viscosity in the 18 to 1725 centistokes range in 90 seconds or less. Thus its SI units are newton-seconds per square metre, or pascal-seconds. Viscosity is defined scientifically as a force multiplied by a time divided by an area. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of "thickness": for example, syrup has a higher viscosity than water. The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. Simplenote provides three ways to share your notes with others.
